Charlie  26 is the call sign used to protect the identity of a female veteran  whose experience reflects the reality many women faced — and continue to  face — within military culture.

Her story is not only about assault. It is about administrative harm, weaponised bureaucracy, and the systemic ways institutions can silence those who speak up.
Natasha Hilbers shares Charlie 26’s story with her full knowledge and permission as part of the She Served AU initiative — a platform dedicated to amplifying the voices of  Australian women who served and ensuring their experiences are not  erased or minimised.

Charlie 26 endured years of harassment, sexual  violence, intimidation, and retaliation during her service. When she  attempted to report and seek accountability, the response she  encountered was not protection, but process — layers of administrative  resistance that made

truth harder to carry forward.

This form of administrative abuse can be as damaging as the original harm. Files stall. Complaints  vanish. Funding and opportunities disappear. Reputations are quietly  undermined. Survivors are often left in a position where the only way  to-

prove the fire still burns is to walk back into it.

Charlie  26’s story demonstrates how cultural harm can continue long after the  uniform comes off. The systems that failed to protect her during service  followed her into civilian life through professional obstruction,  reputational pressure, and public victim-blaming.

Her  courage in speaking out is not about revisiting trauma. It is about  ensuring the next generation does not inherit the same silence.

On this page, updates and reflections relating to Charlie 26’s story will be shared to document the cultural realities of Military Sexual  Trauma and the administrative systems that often surround it.

Some of this content may be confronting.

But silence has never protected survivors.

Truth has.
